United States Equestrian Drill Team Competition -2008

The Peruvian horse world should be inordinately proud of the Texas Ladies Aside and their accomplishments at the United States Equestrian Drill Competitions held at the Texas Rose Horse Park, June 24 - 28, 2008. The "ride" these past few months have been arduous and fraught with unexpected challenges but with team work they have been able to present a Class Act :) Each rider has put forth a great deal of effort and expense to make this happen.

Kudos to Clare and our Quad Team! The beauty and precision of their presentation on their matching chestnuts was of the "goose bump" variety even though the judges found their performance “lacking in difficulty”.  Their spacing, alignment and overall presentation were superb. They will always be the Champions in the eyes of their team mates. That was the first ever drill that the TLA had performed that was choreographed to the music and completely whistle free! They set the bar for the rest of the TLA. Way to go Ladies!!

The Quad Team consisted of Clare Wigginton (Captain), Sallie Cochran (Coach), Beth Ann Bilke and Micky McClure.

The TLA was proud to bring home the Gaited Trophy Flag once more. Finisimo, the Paso Fino team, has improved over the years and it is becoming more of a challenge to stay ahead of them.

The 6th place in Div.1 is a fine feather in the TLA’s cap. The teams they placed behind are all rodeo style teams with more experience and resources than the TLA has. The history of Drill riding being what it is these teams will usually have and advantage over the TLA.....speed and precision [and flags] is a tough combination to beat. There were thirteen teams in this Championship Division and the TLA acquited themselves well in this, their first time ever entry into an extremely tough Division.

Team members, in addition to the four riders previously mentioned, were Beverly Raphel, Barbara Hannes (Coach), Bernice Farrow (Coach), Laura Ellis, Laura Polk, Emily Jilka, Joann Cronin and Eileen Craig. Also Alana Hannes as alternate rider.

The TLA is one of the few teams that changes their costumes and music every time they perform - one of the factors that is responsible for their great crowd appeal. This time the Ladies were most elegant in their cream and gold “Peru” Costume (Gaited Div.) and a very formal red, gold and black habit for Div.1 The Quad Team appeared in black and white with shimmering burgundy accents. The horses all wore beautiful handmade beaded neck pieces reminiscent of the Laureado neck chain used in Peru.

The fabulous, hardworking TLA ground crew consisted of Barb.Bordman, Laura Bilke, Laura Polk’s Little Sister, Peggy and Pebble Emmenheiser, Jamie & her Mom (Bernice‘s family), Mike McClure, Russell Farrow, Conrad Hannes, Niki Juarez and Laura Ellis' parents. They are indeed the "many hands that make light work" :) THANK YOU!!!!

It must be added that the TLA achieved this success despite the fact that practices this year had to be limited to once a month due to gas prices. Most teams practice at least once a week; some more often. The TLA has no financial sponsor thus each rider must cover her own expenses for practices as well as any performances they give. Any monetary assistance or sponsorship would be greatly appreciated by the team.                                         TEXAS ROUNDUP.

The TLA presented their first exhibition of the year this past Saturday at the Spring Roundup Peruvian Horse Show at the brand new Brazos County Expo Center in Bryan/College Station, TX.

Nerves were taut as the drill included two new, difficult manuevers as well as a changed entry. Having had to drop practices to once a month due to gas prices the team did not feel as ready as they would have liked to.  None the less, "the show must go on" so with cinches tightened and smiles in place the team of twelve swept into the arena.  After a  missed que, or two, everyone settled down and rode a great performance.  Sally Cochran stole the day when Chimayo, one of the pivot horses backed out of the Wagon Wheel.  After a cheery wave to crowd she expertly manueverd him back into possition.  The audience loved it!  The TLA once more aquited themselves with class.

Riders included Bev. Raphel, Barbara Hannes, Bernice Farrow, Sallie Cochran, Clare Whigginton, Bethann Bilke, Micky McClure, Joann Cronin, Emily Jilka, Laura Polk, Laura Ellis and Eileen Craig.  Our ground crew was phenominal as usual. Thank you guys and gals!!

Several Ladies went on to compete in the show as well.  The Side Saddle class was one of the best in recent years.   Congratulations to Alice Wolf for taking the blue ribbon!  Bernice's grand daughter, Jamie, missed the Reserve Jr. Hi Point award by one point....this at her very first show!  WAY TO GO Jamie!  Micky and Laura Polk rode beautifully in Performance Pairs and took second place. There were many more ribbons and awards won but we will have to await the official show results in order to avoid errors.

The next event is the National Drill Team Competition in June and the team will be working hard in the next two months in order to ensure their success there.
